ACE World Book Day 2023

World Book Day is an international annual event organised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). It was first celebrated 25 years ago and is celebrated in 100 countries world-wide!!
The aim of World Book Day is to ‘promote reading for pleasure’ as the ‘single biggest indicator of a child’s future success.’ Founder Baroness Gail Rebuck commented back in 1997 that UNESCO wanted to do something to reposition reading. She says their aim is the same today as it was then, that ‘reading is fun, relevant, accessible, exciting and has the power to transform lives.’

Just 10 minutes…
Just 10 minutes of reading stories with children can make a crucial difference to their future success.
The World Book Day website has a wealth of information, resources and competitions along with story book videos and audio books for families to discover.
Last year we caught up with Mr Seager to discuss his role as English Lead both at Astley and across the Trust and discussed the importance of reading for children; the use of Read Write Inc to help pupils learn phonics and developing a love of reading through inspirational books. For information about how English and reading are taught through the Astley year groups see our article
Since WBD 2022 we have seen the opening of Astley’s new school library with an amazing stock of brand new fiction and non-fiction books for pupils to explore and staff to use in relation to their Ace curriculum and a fantastic and inspiring author visit by Chris Riddell in the Autumn term.
Pupils have been enjoying taking out their new books and visiting the library with their class.
We caught up with Mr Seager to ask what’s instore for World Book Day 2023.
Mr Seager, what activities will the children take part in this year on World Book Day 2023?
We are continuing our tradition of grouping the children right across the school to take part in a variety of activities. Working together, children from Bears right up to Sharks will learn all about favourite books, picked by the adults and have plenty of fun along the way. Added to this, we are inviting families in to take part in a special sharing activity to start the day off – decorating a stone in the style of their favourite book!
Who might you be dressing up as for World Book Day? And who have you dressed up as before on World Book Day and what do you like about the character you chose?
All the children have once again been given the chance to dress-up as their favourite book character – or, as an alternative, simply wear their pyjamas so they can ‘snuggle up with a book!’. After a few years as dressing up as Peter from Peter Rabbit (one of my favourite stories as a child), this year I am dressing up as ‘The Highway Rat’. The character is great fun, a bit naughty, but certainly has many adventures! It is also another favourite of my daughters, so they helped convince me!
What feedback have staff had from pupils regarding the new library?
The staff and children have absolutely loved the new library so far! It is such a joy to hear stories being read and a real ‘buzz’ around the children when they bring back their books every week! Parents have also commented that the books coming home are exciting and helping the children develop even more of a love of reading. Long may it continue!
Thank you, Mrs Seager and we look forward to enjoying World Book Day 2023 with you!!
